The Architecture Factory was an old manufacturing facility. During the recession Munster Technological University bought it and the School decided to covert it into Architecture studios. The interior space was designed CIT lecturer Marc O Riain with RKD Architects and ARUP commisisoned to realise the project.
It was completed and occupied in late 2012 and went on to win the Institute of Designers in Ireland Grand Prix in 2013 and 5 international design awards, in Singapore, London, Milan and 2 in New York.
The space promotes and encourages interaction leading to peer learning. It was designed and built for a fraction of the cost of a normal University project, proving what we teach here, good design doesn’t have to cost the earth.
The containers here, which house the lecturer’s offices, have been around the world 3 times. A lot of the story of the building is about recycling and reusing existting buildings.
